What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a modern approach to traditional psychotherapy. KAP combines talking therapy with sessions assisted by psychedelics to help individuals work through various mental and emotional challenges.

Ketamine is a safe, effective, and legal medicine that has been used for decades in high doses as an anesthetic. It is well-researched and is considered an essential medicine by the World Health Organization.

Clinical research has demonstrated that, when administered at lower doses, Ketamine works rapidly, effectively, and safely to improve symptoms in people living with depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The combination of using ketamine’s neuroplastic effects along with the support and guidance of a trained therapist within the therapy process, is what makes this treatment extremely effective.

What does ketamine feel like?

Ketamine is dissociative and creates a sense of feeling detached from the body and an overall sense of self. While the ketamine experience is different for each person, people often describe experiences such as pleasant body sensations, a sense of relaxation, shifts in emotional experiences, and a dream-like state, which can include visual experiences.

The ketamine experience allows for the relaxation of usual thinking patterns and narratives. This often leads to an interruption of negative cycles and preoccupations and a sense of openness. In many ways, ketamine can act as a “shortcut” through our habitual patterns of protection and defenses, allowing us to discover what lies beneath.

How does our process works?

Preparation

KAP begins with an initial consultation following the completion of intake paperwork. During this session, we will determine whether KAP is an appropriate treatment for you. Following this determination,  there will be a medical evaluation with our collaborating physician. Once medically cleared, we will work together to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your unique needs. Preparation sessions will guide you through creating an optimal mindset, setting your intentions, aftercare, and how to make the most of your time with us.

Exploration

During exploration sessions, you will receive an oral dose of ketamine to access an altered state of consciousness accompanied by your therapist. Patients lie comfortably and listen to a specifically curated music playlist while wearing eyeshades to help them focus internally.

Integration

During integration, patients are encouraged to discuss their experiences from their ketamine exploration sessions. The brain can make new connections and rewrite learned patterns in an altered, neuroplastic state.  With guidance from their therapist, the goal is for patients to find ways to integrate this experience onto their everyday lives.
